[Search Engines and Subject Directories] [Meta-Search Engines] [ How to Find Information on the Internet] [How to Evalutate Information on the Interent] |
| Search Engines and Subject Directories: | |
| When using any Search tool on the Internet keep in mind
that each one has its' own strengths and weaknesses. ( see the Choose
the Best Search Engine for your purpose for some tips in this area).
For example, Yahoo is particularly good at finding sports and entertainment
information whereas Google or Northern Light are better at locating
educational information. Each tool has different features, which may change over time, so make sure to check out the Help section in order to ensure that your searches are as effective as they can be. Keep in mind that Search Engines (e.g. Google) search a much greater number of pages on the Web than do Subject Directories (e.g. Yahoo!). Subject Directories collect selected Web sites and organize them by subject. When you search these pages, you are only searching the sites chosen by them. When you use a Search Engine though, it has not pre-selected any sites for you, but goes and searches across millions, if not billions of pages (e.g. Google searches over 1.3 billion pages) |
